PEORIA, Ariz. — The smile Miguel Olivo flashed midday Wednesday on his way off Field 3 of the Mariners’ Spring Training complex said a lot about how the first test of his healing groin had gone.

Minutes later, the Seattle catcher’s words said a lot more.

“No problems. I feel happy. I didn’t think it would heal so fast,” Olivo said, minutes after having caught left-hander Jason Vargas for three innings of an intrasquad game.

“I’m impressed. I’m ready to go,” added Olivo, who said of prospects of being ready to go all-out on Opening Night in nine days, “Oh, yeah.”

Olivo had been limited to routine rehab drills since badly straining his left groin muscle while scoring against the Indians in a March 5 exhibition. The recovery of the veteran catcher, who signed as a free agent this past offseason, is deemed critical to the Mariners, otherwise thin at the position.

Plans are for Olivo to catch in a couple of more Minor League games prior to stepping up in class for the end of the Cactus League schedule. Following Wednesday night’s game against the Rockies, the Mariners will have seven games remaining in Arizona, and the March 30 exhibition against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
